MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is set to hit Kerala in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said in a release. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Islands, some more parts of the Bay of Bengal, and the remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, it said. 

 

Some parts of Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive very heavy rainfall in the next six to seven days till Tuesday, it said. Very heavy rainfall is also seen in parts of Karnataka during the same period.

 

The weather department expects heavy rainfall over parts of interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till Monday and over Lakshadweep from Wednesday to Saturday. Coastal Karnataka is likely to experience heavy rainfall from Thursday to Sunday, the department said.

 

Meanwhile, it has issued an orange alert for strong surface winds and hailstorm in several districts of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. It has also issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and lightning in several districts of Haryana and Punjab. 

 

In terms of temperatures, the weather agency expects a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2–4 degrees Celsius over many parts of northwest India till Wednesday and then a gradual fall by 2–4 degrees Celsius from Thursday to Tuesday. A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius is also likely over east India till Friday. 

 

A gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely over Maharashtra till Friday and Gujarat is likely to see a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius till Friday. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country till Tuesday.

 

In addition, heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Bihar from Friday to Tuesday and in east Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Wednesday and in Odisha till Sunday. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to experience similar weather till Thursday, the weather department said.  End
