NEW DELHI – The Centre has mandated prior valid import authorisation for importing silver in the form of powder and grain, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification. The tighter restrictions come after India hiked import duty on silver to 15% from 6% last month to discourage imports and save foreign exchange reserves amid a weakening rupee.
Imports of silver in the form of grains, powder, and other forms where the content is 99.9% silver are restricted. "Import of items under the above-mentioned....shall be permitted only against a valid Import Authorisation issued by the DGFT," the notification said.
In May, the government had restricted import of silver bars with 99.9% purity and other semi-manufactured forms of silver. These restricted items can only be imported by the Reserve Bank of India and qualified jewellers through the India International Bullion Exchange. End
