NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange ended down Tuesday. Jeera and turmeric continued to extend losses as the pace of arrivals accelerated in physical markets, while limited demand at prevailing prices weighed on coriander.
The most-active June contract of TURMERIC fell 3% to 15,656 per 100 kg, as rising daily arrivals have created a temporary "supply glut" in local markets, analysts said. Discounts for poor-quality, high-moisture produce also weighed on prices. "Turmeric arrivals surged sharply by 126% year-on-year to 16,067 tonnes compared to 7,111 tonnes during the corresponding period last year," SMC Global Securities said. The contract logged losses for the fourth session on Tuesday and hit a two-week low of INR 15,490 earlier in the day.
The most-active June contract of JEERA declined 0.6% to INR 18,945 per 100 kilograms. The contract extended its fall for the fifth session Tuesday and hit a fresh seven-month low of INR 18,850 amid rising crop arrivals from Rajasthan and limited demand.
"Jeera futures are likely to float down in the range of INR 18,700-INR 19,400, pressured by supply. Moreover, cautious steps by market participants are also putting pressure on prices," SMC Global Securities said.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER fell 1% to INR 12,752 per 100 kg. Demand for the spice has weakened after the contract Tuesday hit a one-week high of INR 13,170 per 100 kg. In addition, prevailing arrival pressure across key markets is likely to keep prices range-bound for the time being, according to SMC Global Securities.
