MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed mixed trends, while prices of maize and rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, rose amid a slight slowdown in arrivals, while prices remained largely steady in other markets, they said. Maize prices are expected to rise in the near term due to prospects of lower kharif acreage, while rice prices could remain range-bound amid low demand, they said.
WHEAT prices in Kota rose by INR 32-INR 40 per 100 kilograms from Monday to INR 2,375-INR 2,400 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 5,000 bags to 20,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices have risen due to a slight slowdown in arrivals, he said. "Arrivals have begun to slow down every other day, so prices have risen," he said. However, Mehta does not see a further rise in prices as the trend in arrivals is likely to remain uncertain in the near term, he said. "Farmers didn't bring arrivals for one-two days because no one was buying, but that doesn't mean we will see a proper decline in arrivals soon, so we can't say if prices will rise more," he said.
The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 10 per 100 kg from Monday to INR 2,590 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Though prices fell slightly, demand and supply in the market remains largely the same as Monday, he said. "A fall of INR 10 per 100 kg is negligible," he said. Arrivals are expected to begin declining shortly, he said. "Arrivals will decrease month-to-month now," he said. However, this is unlikely to lead to a rise in prices, as most buyers and the government hold ample supplies of the stock, he said.
The government has wrapped up its procurement operations largely in Madhya Pradesh, Kochar said. As of Friday, central nodal agencies in the state have purchased around 10.4 million tonnes of wheat, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said in a post on social media platform X. The procurement target for the state was set at 10 million tonnes.
The price of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are supported by the government's ongoing procurement amid low activity in the market, he said.
The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,175 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged amid stable demand, he said. With delay in the onset of monsoon over the Indian mainland and expectations of below-normal rainfall over the country in June, farmers may shift from water-intensive maize to other crops which are less reliant on water, such as urad, he said. This could support prices in the near term, he said. The India Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall during June at 92% of the long-period average, which is below normal.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,100-INR 9,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices were unchanged amid low market activity, with both demand and supply of the grain low and matched, he said. Prices are expected to remain largely steady in the near term as the market does not expect any spike in demand until the festival season starts in August or once the Strait of Hormuz opens up, he said. Countries in West Asia are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice exports. End
