--IMD: See heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala till Monday 

 

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to hit parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu around Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. This marks a delay of about three days from the normal onset date of Jun. 1. The monsoon trough is also likely to advance over more parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Islands, and the Bay of Bengal around Thursday, the weather department said. As of Tuesday, the trough was in the same position as it had been on Saturday, the department said. 

 

The presence of the monsoon trough near Kerala has triggered several weather systems over south peninsular India, which are likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over the state till Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over most parts of south India till Monday, while thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till Thursday, the bureau said. 

 

Two upper air cyclonic circulations lie near and over east India, and a trough runs from central Pakistan to West Bengal, the weather department said. These weather systems are likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Thursday to Saturday, and thundersqualls over Odisha till Wednesday, the department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India till Monday. Heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Wednesday to Monday, and over Assam and Meghalaya from Friday to Monday.

 

In central India, hailstorms are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, the bureau said. Thundersqualls are also expected over parts of Gujarat till Wednesday, while light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of west India till Saturday.

 

Under the influence of multiple weather systems over and near northwest India, hailstorms are expected in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls are expected in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday, in west Rajasthan till Wednesday, and in east Rajasthan till Thursday, the bureau said. Dust storms are seen in west Rajasthan on Wednesday.

 

Heatwave conditions are likely in parts of Bihar from Thursday to Saturday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are expected in parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Konkan, and Goa till Wednesday, in Odisha till Saturday, and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Thursday, the bureau said.  End
