MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh were mixed, while prices in Maharashtra were steady, traders said. Prices will rise in the coming days as firm household demand for sugar is expected at the start of June, they added.

Mills in west Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady due to need-based demand from traders, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Mills in the central part of the state cut prices by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg as demand was limited at higher rates, he said. However, in the coming days, prices are likely to increase due to strong household demand in the first week of every month, he said.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are likely to rise this week as demand improves temporarily, he added. Demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers is expected to be lower than in May, as temperatures will come down once the southwest monsoon sets in. Hence, prices may rise only at the start, when households and traders stock up the pipeline,

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 4,000-INR 4,140 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 20-INR 30 at INR 4,000-INR 4,140 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2047 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 3.6% at 14.56 cents per pound due to concerns that an emerging El Nio weather pattern could curb rainfall and damage the cane crop in India, the world's second-largest producer.  End

US$1 = INR 94.99
