MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices are expected to remain unchanged in the near term amid ample supply with both buyers and the government, they said. Maize prices could rise in the short term due to expectations of lower kharif acreage, while rice prices could stay steady due to low market activity, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were unchanged at INR 2,340-INR 2,360 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 5,000 bags to 20,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were steady as demand and supply of the grain are largely unchanged, he said. Though arrivals of the crop have declined from the previous month as most of it has been procured by the government, some farmers still hold sizeable stocks of the grain, he said. Arrivals of the crop are likely to continue hitting markets steadily in the near term, keeping supply comfortable, he said.

"There is ample supply of wheat everywhere, prices will not fluctuate in the near term," said Kailash Kakani, a local trader from Indore. "Even if prices show any signs of rising, the government will be swift to release tenders for offloading their massive stocks to keep prices under control," he said.

As of Tuesday, the government had purchased 34.54 million tonnes of wheat, up more than 16% on year. The current procurement figure has crossed the previous target of 34.50 million tonnes. The Centre has slightly raised the wheat procurement target for the ongoing 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) rabi marketing season to nearly 34.60 million tonnes due to a hike in the procurement target for Gujarat.

The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of wheat were unchanged amid stable demand, he said. "Nothing much has changed in the market, and it won't change in the near term too, so prices will remain steady," he said.

The price of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are supported by the government's ongoing procurement amid low activity in the market, he said.

The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 2,185 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were steady amid stable demand and supply, he said. Prices are likely to rise in the near term due to expectations of a fall in kharif acreage, he said. Forecasts of deficient rainfall during the southwest monsoon are expected to prompt farmers to shift from maize to other crops which are less-water intensive, he said. The crop also required more fertilisers, and amid a shortage due to the ongoing hostilities in West Asia, maize farmers could be discouraged from sowing the coarse grain, he said.

Rainfall in the upcoming southwest monsoon season in India is likely to be 90% of the long-period average with a model error of plus or minus 4%, indicating that below-normal rainfall is expected over the country as a whole from June to September, the India Meteorological Department said.

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,100-INR 9,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices were unchanged amid low market activity, with both demand and supply of the grain low and matched, he said.  End
