MUMBAI – The onset of the southwest monsoon over some parts of Kerala is likely in the next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department said. This marks a delay from the normal onset date, which is Jun. 1. The movement of the monsoon trough over the state is expected to trigger multiple weather systems over the region, which are likely to cause very heavy rainfall from Wednesday to Thursday, the weather department said.

 

The monsoon trough is also likely to advance over some parts of Tamil Nadu, and more parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal in the next two to three days, the weather department said. As of Monday, the trough remains in the same position as it was on Saturday, the department said.

 

Heavy rainfall is expected over many parts of south peninsular India till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Thunderqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely in Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday, it said.

 

The presence of multiple upper air cyclonic circulations over and near east India are likely to cause heavy rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Thursday to Saturday, while thundersqualls are expected over parts of Odisha till Tuesday, the bureau said. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of east India till Sunday, it said. Heavy rainfall is also expected over most parts of northeast India till Sunday.

 

The weather department has forecast heightened weather activity over west Madhya Pradesh, with heavy rain likely over the region on Tuesday and Wednesday, hailstorms till Tuesday, and thundersqualls till Thursday, the department said.

 

In west India, thudnersqualls are expected over parts of Gujarat on Tuesday and Thursday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over multiple parts of west India till Sunday, the bureau said.

 

A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh, while three upper air cyclonic circulations lie over different parts of northwest India. Under their influence, thundersqualls are likely over many parts of the region till Friday, the weather bureau said. Hailstorms are expected over Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday and Thursday, it said.

 

Heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Bihar till Sunday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim till Wednesday, over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Tuesday, and over Odisha from Tuesday to Friday, the department said.  End
