--MCX launches 'Silver 100' futures Monday

MUMBAI – The Silver 100 futures contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India started trading on Monday, marking the latest addition to its existing portfolio of highest traded bullion contracts, the exchange said in a release. The Silver 100 futures opened at INR 2,725.00 per 100 grams. At 1122 IST, silver 100 futures traded at INR 2,766.00 per 100 grams.

The contract is effective for hedging and investment for jewellers, small and medium enterprises, and retail investors, the exchange said in a press release Monday. "The Silver 100 Futures contract helps businesses in India's silver industry protect themselves against price volatility. Local jewellery businesses can now hedge or take delivery in quantities that are better aligned with their inventory needs. This reduces the need to commit larger amounts of capital or take exposure beyond actual business requirements," the release quoted Praveena Rai, managing director and chief executive officer of MCX, as saying.

"The contract will also help retail participants to invest in silver in smaller quantities over time, while trading through a secure regulated exchange framework," the release quoted Rai as saying.

The silver being traded will have to be of 999 grade and 999 fineness. No negative tolerance on the minimum fineness shall be permitted and the white metal below 999 purity will be rejected, it said. The initial margin will be a minimum of 10% but in case of additional volatility, additional or special margin may be imposed, the release said.

The maximum allowed open position will be 100 tonnes or 5% of the market wide open position, whichever is higher for all silver contracts combined. For a member, the limit will be 1,000 tonnes or 20% of the market wide open position, whichever is higher, for all silver contracts combined.

The exchange already trades silver futures contracts of 30 kilograms, 5 kg, and 1 kg contracts. In Options, the exchange has 5 kg and 30 kg monthly contracts. The exchange had announced the launch of Silver 100 futures on May 14.
