MUMBAI – Mahanagar Gas Ltd. said it has raised the price of compressed natural gas and domestic piped natural gas in Mumbai and adjoining areas from Saturday. The price of CNG has been raised by INR 2 per kilogram to INR 86 per kg. This is the second price hike in CNG this month. The revised price is applicable across Mumbai and Greater Mumbai region, Thane urban and adjoining municipalities, and Raigad.

The company has also revised the price of domestic PNG to INR 52 per standard cubic metre. Mahanagar Gas attributed the hike in retail prices for CNG and PNG to "significant increase" in gas procurement costs due to lower allocation of domestic gas, greater reliance on alternative gas sources, and the sharp depreciation of the rupee.

"Even after the above revision, MGL's CNG offers attractive savings of about 45% and 12% as compared to petrol and diesel respectively at current price levels in Mumbai," the company said.

Mahanagar Gas supplies CNG to public transport undertakings such as BEST, besides passenger cars, school buses, and light and heavy commercial vehicles in the Mumbai region. The government has also encouraged households to switch to PNG from liquefied petroleum gas cylinder connections as LPG is mostly imported. The war is West Asia has choked oil and gas supply from the Persian Gulf region and caused prices to rise.

For the March quarter, Mahanagar Gas reported a net profit of INR 1.3 billion on revenue of INR 22.6 billion. Friday, its shares ended at INR 1,095 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.7% from Wednesday. The stock market was shut Thursday for Id-ul-Zuha (Bakri Id).  End
