MUMBAI – The government has raised the base import price of most edible oils in the range of $10-$14 per tonne while lowering that for soyoil, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification late Friday. The revised rates came into effect Saturday.

The Centre levies import duty ad valorem and reviews base import prices depending on the changes in global prices and foreign exchange rates. The government normally revises base import prices of edible oils every fortnight and these are used to calculate the duty on the commodities brought into the country. The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on May 15.

India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for the bulk of the country's imports, with most of it purchased from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, which are the top producers of the commodity.

The base import price of crude palm oil has been raised by $13 per tonne and that of refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil has been raised by $10 per tonne. The government has raised the base import price of both crude palmolein oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil by $14 per tonne each. It has lowered the price of crude soyoil by $12 per tonne.

The following table details the base import prices of edible oils compared with the previous levels, in dollars per tonne, and the revision in absolute terms in dollars:
