NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange ended down on Friday. Jeera contract extended losses for the third session amid selling pressure and limited demand. Turmeric fell further as buying interest declined at prevailing rates, and traders booked profits after the contract hit a one-week high on Tuesday.
The most-active June contract of JEERA was down 0.3% to INR 19,210 per 100 kilograms amid higher fresh crop arrivals and continued selling pressure from Rajasthan. The contract extended losses for the third session on Friday amid weak exports and limited domestic demand in the market. NCDEX was closed Thursday for Id-ul-Zuha.
"The faster harvesting pace resulted in a temporary supply surge instead of a gradual arrival pattern," Kedia Advisory said. Farmers continue to aggressively sell stocks to meet liquidity requirements ahead of the kharif sowing season, keeping overall market sentiment weak, it added.
The most-active June contract of TURMERIC was down 0.1% at INR 16,200 per 100 kg as buying interest declined at prevailing rates. However, the decline was limited amid some demand from traders to replenish inventories, SMC Global Securities said.
The contract has been closing in the red since Tuesday after hitting a one-week high of INR 16,550 per 100 kg earlier in the day. "Profit-booking by traders and stockists who accumulated positions at lower levels in March also contributed to the decline in prices," Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER was largely flat at INR 12,838 per 100 kg. Demand for the spice has weakened after the contract Tuesday hit a one-week high of INR 13,170 per 100 kg. In addition, prevailing arrival pressure across key markets is likely to keep prices range-bound for the time being, according to SMC Global Securities.
The following were the closing prices of the most active spice contracts on Friday:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander June | NCDEX | 100 | 12,838 | -2 |
Jeera June | NCDEX | 100 | 19,210 | -65 |
Turmeric June | NCDEX | 100 | 16,200 | -16 |
