NEW DELHI – The government has raised the June sugar sales quota for Maharashtra and Karnataka, while reducing it for Uttar Pradesh, according to a notification issued by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Friday.

The quota for Uttar Pradesh in June is 6% lower than a month ago at 819,459 tonnes. On the other hand, the sales quota for Maharashtra is up 17% on-month at 778,206 tonnes and Karnataka is 7% higher at 284,924 tonnes.

The Centre has set the all-India domestic sugar sales quota for June at 2.25 million tonnes, down 2.2% on year but unchanged from a month ago.

The sales quota was largely in line with the lower end of market expectations of 2.25-2.30 million tonnes. According to some market participants, the 2.25 million tonnes sales quota for May was insufficient to meet peak summer and marriage-related demand. Bulk buyers, such as ice cream and soft drink manufacturers, increase their sugar purchases during summer. Rural demand for sugar also rose in May as marriages take place during the harvest period.

The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for June, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
