MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady, while prices of tur were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. The correction in tur prices continued in some markets as demand declined after a steep increase last week, they said. Chana prices are likely to be range-bound in the near term, after which a rise is likely amid lower arrivals, they said. Masur prices are expected to remain steady as low demand could remain on par with low supply, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as demand was on par with supply, he said. Prices had risen by INR 400 per 100 kg last week when demand from traders, millers, and stockists had increased significantly ahead of the anticipated rise in demand from June, he said. "When prices rose by INR 400 per 100 kg, many stockists took a step back because they don't want to make bulk purchases at prices which are currently higher than the minimum support price," he said. The minimum support price of chana is INR 5,875 per 100 kg.
Prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term, before climbing higher, Mangal said. Arrivals of chana have slowed down as many farmers have already sold their crops to the government when market prices had ruled below the minimum support price, he said. Arrivals are unlikely to rise in the short term, though during this time of the year, they are typically on the higher side, he said. "Before kharif sowing begins, arrivals usually increase as farmers are looking to finance their expenses for buying seeds and fertilisers, among other things for sowing. However, this year, the government has paid them well, so arrivals will remain low," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,925-INR 5,980 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 per 100 kg from Tuesday to INR 8,050-INR 8,075 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices continued to correct for the third consecutive day as demand simmered down after a steep rise last week, he said. Demand had risen last week as millers and traders looked to stock up on tur ahead of a rise in consumption demand in June, he said.
Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term as demand is likely to remain largely limited amid steady arrivals, Kedia said. However, after June, prices of domestic tur are expected to take cues from the prices of imports, he said. "After June, there will be little to no arrivals of domestic tur, so the market is expected to take direction from the price movement of imports from Myanmar," he said. Shipments of tur from African countries are unlikely to hit Indian ports only from September, making imports from Myanmar one of the biggest cues for domestic prices, he said. With a rise in shipping costs due to elevated crude oil prices, import rates are likely to remain in the upper range, which could also prompt domestic prices to rise, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices were steady as demand and supply of masur were both low and equally matched, he said. Prices had risen steeply in the last few weeks due to rising concerns about lower imports amid ongoing trade disruptions due to the West Asia war, he said. However, most worries have now dissipated, keeping prices unchanged, he said. "Most buyers prefer imported masur because it is cheaper than the domestic variety, even after its landed cost has increased due to the rise in shipping prices," he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,350 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
