MUMBAI – Mumbai has continued to reel under hot and sultry weather conditions, with no pre-monsoon showers recorded in the city in the past one month, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The formation of weather systems on both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is likely to cause light rainfall over the city from Thursday to Sunday, the weather agency said. The intensity and spread of showers over Mumbai is expected to increase from June, the agency said.

 

While Mumbai does not witness heatwave conditions in May as temperatures typically remain below 35 degrees Celsius, the mercury has breached the heatwave threshold on six days during the month, the weather agency said. This is largely due to the absence of any land breeze setting in during the late evening or night hours, it said. The uninterrupted prevalence of westerly winds from the sea has also kept humidity levels high, both during the day and night, it said.

 

A feeble cyclonic circulation has formed over the Arabian Sea, and another such weather system is expected to form over the far eastern side of the Bay of Bengal shortly. A western disturbance and its induced circulation will affect the wind stream over the plains of north India. All these potential weather systems will change the wind flow characteristics along the Konkan coast, and their combined effect could trigger the first pre-monsoon showers over Mumbai and its suburbs.

 

Light rainfall along with partly cloudy skies are likely over Mumbai on Thursday and Friday, the agency said. As the system forming over the Bay of Bengal shifts to central parts of the sea, the wind stream will strengthen along the Konkan coast, increasing the frequency and intensity of showers over the city on Saturday and Sunday, it said. The intensity of rainfall over the city is likely to remain mild during this period, and as such, it is unlikely to provide relief from the hot and humid weather. However, moderate rainfall is likely over the city from June, which could provide relief from the muggy weather.  End
