MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has revised the country's production estimate for the cotton year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) to 33.40 million bales (one bale = 170 kg). The association had earlier pegged the total cotton output at 32.40 million bales.

The association gives estimates every month on the basis of inputs received from associations of 11 cotton-growing states and other trade sources. The projection of cotton output in the north zone, which includes Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, has been left unchanged at 2.90 million bales in 2025-26. 

Cotton production of the central zone, which comprises Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, is projected at 20.3 million bales, up from 19.45 million bales pegged previously. The association has revised its output estimate for all three states. For Maharashtra, cotton output is pegged at 11.5 million bales, for Gujarat is pegged at 7.00 million bales, and for Madhya Pradesh is pegged at 1.75 million bales, the association said.

Production of the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 9.70 million bales, higher from the previous projection of 9.50 million bales, the association said. Odisha and other states are expected to contribute 350,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production. 

The total supply of cotton in 2025-26 is estimated at 44.16 million bales, against 39.26 million bales in the previous year. The association has estimated imports in 2025-26 at 4.70 million bales compared to last year's imports of 4.10 million bales. The cotton body has raised India's cotton consumption view for the current cotton year to 33.8 million bales, it said in the release.  

Meanwhile, the association has raised its cotton export estimate for 2025-26 to 1.80 million bales. The estimate for closing stock on Sept. 30 is seen at 8.56 million bales.

Additionally, the association said that encouraged by the remunerative prices and better income realised during the current season, farmers are expected to bring a larger area under cotton cultivation during the next crop year. Consequently, the all-India cotton sowing area is expected to increase by around 7%.

Note: Supply figures do not add up because the opening stock isn't mentioned.
