MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady as purchases were need-based at higher prices, traders said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound for the next few days, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand was limited at high prices, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Prices had increased the previous day by INR 15–INR 20 per 100 kilograms amid heatwave conditions in several parts of the country. Prices are likely to remain range-bound as they have risen by INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg in the past few days, Gupta said.
Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are likely to be range-bound in the coming days, he said.
Meanwhile, the government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for June at 2.25 million tonnes, unchanged from May and 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in June last year. Market participants said the June sales quota is sufficient to meet demand. Demand from ice-cream and cold-beverage manufacturers in June will be lower than in May, as temperatures will cool once the southwest monsoon starts.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 4,000-INR 4,140 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,010-INR 4,160 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1846 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.8% at 14.59 cents per pound, tracking a fall in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices reduce the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
