MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to cover more parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, the Comorin Area, the Bay of Bengal, and the remaining parts of the Andaman Sea in the next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday. The monsoon currently passes through the same locations as on Saturday, the department said. 

 

On May 15, the weather department forecast the onset of the monsoon over Kerala on Tuesday, with a model error of plus or minus 4 days. The onset will not occur on Tuesday, Bikram Singh, director of the weather department's Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, told Informist earlier. The normal date of monsoon onset over Kerala is Jun. 1.

 

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a red alert for extreme heat due to severe heatwaves and warm night conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Telangana till Wednesday, and over east Madhya Pradesh till Thursday. A red alert for extreme heat is issued when a severe heatwave persists in the region for more than two days. 

 

Heatwaves to severe heatwaves are expected in most parts of central India till Friday, and in some parts of northwest India till Thursday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail over parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Konkan till Wednesday, the coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday, over Tamil Nadu till Friday, over Odisha till Saturday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday and Saturday, the department said.

 

The movement of the southwest monsoon wave will trigger multiple weather systems over southern and eastern India, leading to increased weather activity. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of north interior Karnataka on Wednesday and over south interior Karnataka till Wednesday. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely over parts of north interior Karnataka till Thursday and over Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Hailstorms are expected over parts of north interior Karnataka on Wednesday, the bureau said.

 

Heavy showers are expected over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Sunday, over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday, and over Bihar on Wednesday and Friday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over most parts of east India till Friday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over most parts of northeast India till Monday, it said.

 

Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over most parts of central and western India till Monday, the weather department said.  End
