MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India fell in early trade Tuesday as bullion and base metal components were in the red. The Composite index opened higher at 26112.89 points, against Monday's close of 26053.42 points. At 1044 IST, the index was down 0.3% at 25964.09 points.

Among the three components of the Composite index, the bullion index was trading 0.8% lower, as gold declined 0.6% and silver 2%. Bullion prices opened lower after fresh US strikes on Iran dampened recent optimism about a potential peace deal between the two sides. The US military said it attacked missile launch sites and mine-laying vessels in southern Iran, in what a US military spokesperson described as "self-defence" strikes, Al Jazeera reported. Earlier, Iranian media reported explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

US military operations in southern Iran and ongoing peace negotiations will keep market participants cautious about inflation risks.

The energy index was up 2.4%, with crude oil trading 2.5% higher while natural gas was trading 0.7% higher. The base metal index was down 0.2%, as copper and zinc were lower by 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively. On the other hand, aluminium and lead were trading higher by 0.3% and 0.3%, respectively.

The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy.  End
