MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh rose as demand from bulk consumers of sugar, such as ice-cream and cold-beverage manufacturers, firmed up amid the heatwave conditions in several parts of the country. Prices of the sweetener also rose in Maharashtra as the cost of transportation rose with the rise in diesel prices, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15–INR 20 per 100 kg as there was good demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. The India Meteorological Department has forecast severe heatwave conditions in some parts of Punjab Tuesday and Wednesday and in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi till Wednesday. During the next 4-5 days, several regions of central and north-west India are likely to experience heatwave conditions, the weather bureau said.

Moreover, since the sales quota set by the government for the month of May was low, mills have already sold most of their stock and hence are under no pressure to push sales, Gupta said. That is also why they are able to raise prices. Prices have been increased by INR 60–INR 70 per 100 kg from the earlier lows, he said.

Mills in Maharashtra also raised prices by INR 10 per 100 kg, as the cost of transportation has increased, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Monday, oil marketing companies Monday raised the retail price of petrol and diesel for the fourth time in May. The price of diesel has been raised by an average INR 7.53 per litre so far.

Kuvadia also said that with the sales quota for May being low, mills are not feeling any pressure to sell their stocks. They are now awaiting the release of the sales quota for June, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 4,000-INR 4,140 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 4,010-INR 4,160 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 4,072-INR 4,152 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,945-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

The price of sugar on the InterContinental Exchange was unavailable Monday as the market was closed for the Memorial Day holiday in the US.  End
