NEW DELHI – The area covered under summer crops across India as of Friday rose to 3% on year to 8.60 million hectares, according to data released by the agriculture ministry. The acreage of all major summer crops, except rice and moong, registered an on-year rise, the data showed.

India's summer acreage rose marginally to 8.60 million hectares from 8.31 million hectares on May 8, mainly due to higher sowing of moong, while acreage of other crops remained unchanged from May 8. Data for May. 15, or last Friday, showed no changes from May 8 levels, indicating that sowing activities have nearly concluded for most summer crops.

The area under summer rice, the largest crop grown during the season in terms of both acreage and production, remained unchanged at 3.11 million hectares since May 8, suggesting that sowing has ended. Summer rice acreage was 4% lower than 3.24 million tonnes last year.

Though the acreage of moong, the largest summer pulse, declined nearly 16% on year, total area under pulses registered a 2.4% on-year rise due to increases in smaller pulses such as urad.

The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered in the last two years, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.

The following table details the sowing of key summer crops as of Friday, compared with the same period a year ago, in hectares, and the year-on-year percentage change:
