MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur showed mixed trends while prices of moong were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose in some markets on higher demand and a slowdown in arrivals, they said. Tur prices fell in some markets as demand declined amid a rise in arrivals, they said. Moong prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term as the low demand is on a par with low supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 per 100 kilograms from Friday to INR 6,200-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have risen due to seasonal recovery in demand, he said. Millers and traders are looking to stock up on chana ahead of the anticipated rise in consumption from June, when the monsoon sets in and temperatures fall, he said. Prices were also supported by low arrivals, he said. Most of the rabi crop has been sold to the government as prices had ruled below the minimum support price for most of March to mid-May, prompting many farmers to sell their crop to the government, he said.

Prices are expected to rise further in the near term, potentially touching INR 7,000 per 100 kg, as demand is likely to keep rising amid lower supply, Kochar said. Concern about a decline in imports due to higher shipping expenses could also support prices in the near term, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg from Friday to INR 7,400-INR 8,050 per 100 kg. Prices of old tur also fell by INR 50 per 100 kg from last week to INR 6,700-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader, said. About 35 trucks, each carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of the new crop, and one or two trucks with old tur arrived in Solapur, he said.

Prices fell due to a slowdown in demand amid a rise in arrivals, he said. "Demand had risen in the last two weeks when millers and traders wanted to stock up their processing pipeline, so now not many are looking to make bulk purchases," he said. Arrivals have risen as farmers are offloading their stocks to take advantage of the prevailing prices, he said. In the past two weeks, the steep rise in demand had pushed prices in many spot markets near or above the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, he said. "Only some farmers hold stocks of tur right now, but those are farmers who own large pieces of land, so they have plenty of tur still stocked up to sell during times like this," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,250-INR 8,350 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices are steady as demand and supply of moong are both low and equally matched, he said. Arrivals of the summer crop have largely been wrapped up, and this has pushed prices up last week. However, demand has declined, which is keeping prices steady, he said. Though demand is sluggish, prices are unlikely to fall in the near term as there are little to no arrivals of moong, he said.  End
