MUMBAI – The government has procured 2.05 million tonnes of chana so far, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a report, quoting market sources. Both the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. have procured the largest share of chana from Maharashtra, the pulses body said.

NAFED has procured around 1.4 million tonnes of chana across the country so far. This includes 850,000 tonnes purchased from Maharashtra, 250,000 tonnes procured from Madhya Pradesh, and 300,000 tonnes of chana purchased from Gujarat, the pulses body said.

The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation body has purchased 650,000 tonnes of chana so far from different parts of the country, which includes 300,000 tonnes purchased from Maharashtra. The central nodal agency has also procured 200,000 tonnes of chana from Gujarat and 150,000 tonnes from Madhya Pradesh, the pulses body said.

The government is procuring chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg. According to market participants, prices of chana remained below the minimum support price for most of March to the first half of May, which had prompted many farmers, especially in Maharashtra, to sell their crop to the government, leading to robust procurement.  End
