MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh rose as mills had sold most of their stocks and were not under pressure to meet the sales quota for the month, traders said. In Maharashtra, sugar prices were steady as demand was limited, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15–INR 20 per 100 kg as they have sold most of their stock and are no longer in a hurry to meet the sales quota for the month, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. "The allocation of sales quota was low for May, so mills did not have to worry about meeting it," he said.
However, demand was also limited because of the increased prices, he said. Prices are likely to continue being high for some more time unless a few mills find they are running out of time to meet the sales quota, Gupta added.
In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as demand was only need-based, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices had risen during the past few days as there was demand coming in from states such as Rajasthan and Gujarat, but now that demand has been met, he said.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 4,000-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,990-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,062-INR 4,142 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,935-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1738 IST, the price of sugar on the InterContinental Exchange was down nearly 2% at 14.64 cents per pound, on expectation of higher global sugar output. End
