NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices, barring turmeric, were trading down on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Coriander prices are likely to extend losses for the third session amid comfortable near-term supplies, while turmeric contracts rose as traders actively bought to replenish inventories, analysts said. Jeera contracts were down marginally amid weak demand.

At 1540 IST, the most-active June contract of TURMERIC was up 0.3% at INR 16,250 per 100 kilograms, as traders actively purchased the spice to build inventory amid supply concerns, SMC Global Securities said. Arrivals across key markets in Maharashtra and Telangana remained below normal for the season, creating "an immediate supply squeeze" during the peak marketing period, Kedia Advisory said.

Though many farmers are holding back supplies, expecting prices to increase to around INR 18,000, those who require liquidity ahead of kharif sowing are actively selling at current levels. The contract has been gaining since Tuesday and is likely to close higher on Friday as well, analysts said.

"Higher arrivals of late-harvested, high-moisture turmeric resulted in discounting for average-quality material, while profit-booking by traders who accumulated stocks earlier in the season added temporary selling pressure," Kedia Advisory said. SMC Global expects the contract to trade at elevated levels in the range of INR 15,800-INR 16,600 per 100 kg.

The most-active June contract of JEERA was down 0.1% at INR 19,710 per 100 kg amid weak export demand and comfortable supplies. Though jeera arrivals declined in Rajasthan due to unfavourable weather conditions, arrivals from other states continue to progress well.

"While stocks exist, the percentage of high-quality "Sortex" grade carryover is lower than last year, supporting premium pricing." Kedia Advisory said. SMC Global said that despite intermittent buying, price gains are likely to be limited due to the prevailing high market supply.  SMC Global expects the contract to trade between INR 19,370 and INR 20,070 per 100 kg.

The most-active June contract of CORIANDER was down 0.3% at INR 12,736 per 100 kg. The contract is likely to extend its losses for the third session amid comfortable near-term supplies. "Although demand fundamentals remain favourable, prevailing arrival pressure across key mandis (markets) is likely to keep prices rangebound for the time being," SMC Global said. Arrivals have started declining in Gujarat, while supplies from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are yet to report any significant reduction, it added.
