MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell, while those of tur and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country Friday, traders said. Chana prices corrected post a steep rise due to a slowdown in arrivals, they said. Tur prices are expected to fall in the near term if demand remains largely tepid, while prices of masur are seen moving upwards tracking the rise in prices of imports, they said.

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 25 per 100 kilograms from Thursday to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices fell amid a slight correction post a steep upward movement in the past few days, he said. Prices had risen due to a slowdown in arrivals, he said. Supply of the rabi crop has declined, with most of it being sold to the government, he said. Many farmers had sold their crop to the government as prices had remained below the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg from March till the first half of May, he said. Prices had also risen due to a rise in demand, he said.

 

"During this period, demand keeps fluctuating every day, because some buyers begin purchasing chana ahead of the anticipated rise in chana dal consumption in June and July," Jain said. Prices are expected to fall by INR 100 per 100 kg if demand does not rise further in the near term, he said.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 5,875-INR 5,925 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,225-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices have stabilised amid slight volatility, he said. In the past few days, tur prices rose sharply due to a rise in demand and concerns about tighter supplies, he said. "There is some recovery in seasonal demand, so prices were supported," he said. Prices of the imported commodity had also risen steeply due to higher shipping costs and the fall in the rupee, which fanned fears of lower imports, thereby supporting prices of the domestic variety, he said.

 

Prices have corrected slightly in the past two days after the steep climb, Gupta said. "Now, unless demand rises further, prices could fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term," he said. Arrivals of the crop have risen over the past few days, with many farmers offloading their stocks on hope of benefitting from the higher prices, he said. Previously, farmers had held back stocks as prices in many spot markets had dipped below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 8,400-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are steady as low demand for masur is on par with its supply, he said. Prices are expected to rise in the near term tracking the rise in prices of imports, he said. "Imports will become more expensive because of the high shipping costs, and at some point it will get too costly to ship masur to India, so a decline in imports will also support prices," he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
