India FY26 pulses imports dn 18% on yr at 5.96 mln tn; tur, urad imports up

MUMBAI – India's total imports of pulses in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) fell nearly 18% on year to 5.96 million tonnes, data from the commerce ministry showed. Imports of tur and urad rose during the year, while those of masur, yellow peas, chana, and other pulses declined, the data showed. In terms of value, pulses imports during the year were down nearly 35% on year at $3.57 billion.
Tur imports during the year rose more than 21% from the previous year to 1.48 million tonnes, according to the data. Imports of tur accounted for the largest share of India's total pulses imports at nearly 25%. India imported 590,712 tonnes of tur from Mozambique, 366,400 tonnes from Myanmar, and 360,260 tonnes from Tanzania. Tur was also imported from Malawi and other countries.
India imported 1.05 million tonnes of urad during the year, up more than 28% from a year ago. Top sources of urad imports included Myanmar at 781,135 tonnes and Brazil at 240,748 tonnes. Other sources included Thailand at 11,802 tonnes.
The country imported 1.15 million tonnes of masur in FY26, down nearly 6% on year, the data showed. Imports from Australia during the period stood at 565,528 tonnes, while imports from Canada were 533,273 tonnes. India also imported masur from Russia and the US, among other countries.
Imports of yellow peas fell the sharpest among all major pulses during the year, down nearly 49% from last year at 1.11 million tonnes, the data showed. Yellow pea imports from Canada were the highest at 875,515 tonnes, followed by 190,490 tonnes from Russia. India also imported yellow peas from Argentina and Latvia, among other countries.
Chana imports fell over 33% on year to 1.01 million tonnes in FY26, the data showed. India imported 836,270 tonnes of chana from Australia, and 165,482 tonnes from Tanzania. Among other countries, India also imported chana from Myanmar.
Imports of other pulses, which include other varieties of chana, moong, red beans, kidney beans, and broad beans, fell nearly 49% on year to 164,775 tonnes, the data showed. End
