MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was at 60.830 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 33.14% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up nearly 12% from a year ago and over 24% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 7.93 billion cubic metres, which is nearly 40% of the total live storage capacity. A year ago, the water level was over 28% of capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 5.99 billion cubic metres, accounting for nearly 28% of the storage capacity, as against nearly 26% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 14.35 billion cubic metres, accounting for nearly 38% of the storage capacity, compared with 32% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 19.17 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, over 39% of the total live storage capacity, compared with nearly 33% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was 13.39 billion cubic metres, which is over 24% of the storage capacity, compared with over 27% a year ago.
India recorded average rainfall of 11.8 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 14?low the normal of 13.8 millimetres for the period, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. End
