MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in key markets in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra as demand is only need-based, traders said. Over the past few days, demand for sugar was stronger as traders bought the commodity as their pipelines had been exhausted. Now that the pipelines have been stocked up, demand is only as per daily requirement, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the past few days, prices have increased by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg, tracking higher prices in Maharashtra, but demand at those prices is only as per need, he said. Moreover, traders have already stocked up their pipelines once more, he added.
In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady as demand was limited at higher rates, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices had risen during the past few days as there was demand coming in from states such as Rajasthan and Gujarat, but now that demand has been met, he said.
Prices could fall in the coming days with market participants expecting higher availability of sugar in the domestic market following the ban on exports, traders said. The government has banned exports of raw, white, and refined sugar with immediate effect until Sept. 30.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,062-INR 4,142 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,935-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1903 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1.6% from Wednesday at 14.97 cents per pound, tracking a rise in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar. End
