Global body says April primary aluminium production down 5% on month

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium fell by over 5% month-to-month to 5.92 million tonnes in April, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On a year-on-year basis, production declined by over 2%.   

 

The average daily global aluminium production in April fell to 197,400 tonnes from 201,700 tonnes in March. China's aluminium production fell 3% on month to 3.68 million tonnes in April, but rose 1.5% on year, the data showed.   

 

In Asia, excluding China, production fell to 408,000 tonnes in April from 421,000 tonnes a month earlier. In Africa, aluminium output was 91,000 tonnes in April, down from 113,000 tonnes the previous month.

 

In Gulf Cooperation Council countries, production fell by 135,000 tonnes to 330,000 tonnes in April. Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, fell to 604,000 tonnes in April from 622,000 tonnes in the previous month. Output of the metal in North America fell by 11,000 tonnes to 322,000 tonnes in April, while production in South America declined by 5,000 tonnes to 127,000 tonnes.

 

Global alumina production rose 7% on-month to 12.65 million tonnes in March, according to the data. At 1143 IST, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was at $3,613.0 per tonne, down 0.3% from the previous close.  End
