MUMBAI – The Madhya Pradesh government has extended the wheat procurement deadline to May 28 from May 23 for farmers who had booked their slots, the state's chief minister Mohan Yadav said in a media briefing on Monday. Yadav said the extension was because farmers were facing difficulties and long queues at the procurement centre, and were unable to sell their crop to the government despite booking slots. 

 

The state is set to procure around 10 million tonnes of wheat this year, significantly higher than 7.7 million tonnes procured last year, Yadav said. So far, the Madhya Pradesh government has purchased around 9.1 million tonnes of wheat, he said. Madhya Pradesh is the second-largest producer of wheat in the country. According to the second advance estimates, wheat production in the state during 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at 25.92 million tonnes, up from 24.51 million tonnes a year ago. 

 

Despite global issues, difficulties in storage, procurement of gunny bags, adverse weather conditions, and transportation hurdles, the state has successfully expanded its storage capacity, Yadav said. The state will continue procuring the grain till May 28 at INR 2,625 per 100 kg, which includes the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg and a bonus of INR 40 per 100 kg given by the state, he said.  End
