NEW DELHI – India and the US Wednesday discussed strengthening their collaboration in biotechnology, quantum technologies, space technology, atomic energy, and nuclear medicine. To expand collaboration in the nuclear sector, India is likely to roll out in the "coming weeks" its policy or "final rules" on the participation of private players, the government said in a press release.

Union Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor met here to discuss expansion of the partnership between the two countries by skilling, investment, and knowledge exchange and industry-led partnerships across domains, as per the release. The talks were held under the US-India TRUST initiative as a framework for cooperation among governments, industry, and startups in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology, and space technology, the government said.

"India had opened up the nuclear sector and nuclear medicine-related research and investment to private participation while retaining safeguards and security considerations," Singh said while indicating that "final rules could be rolled out in the coming weeks". The move is expected to allow the private sector to participate and invest in these areas for the "first time", the ministry said in the release.

On investment, Singh referred to the government's Research, Development, and Innovation Fund and said it provides long-term unsecured financial support at about 2-3% interest, allowing the private sector to also participate in research, development, and innovation.

Further, the minister proposed a regular working group, possibly meeting once a month, to take forward investment, skilling, knowledge exchange, and institutional collaboration with US investors, companies, and research institutions, as per the release. "Such engagement would help bring not only capital but also technical expertise, private-sector experience and collaborative capacity into India's emerging science and technology sectors," the government said.  End
