MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Maharashtra rose as there was good demand from other states, traders said. Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand at higher prices was limited, they said.

Mills in Maharashtra raised sugar prices by INR 10 per 100 kg as there was firm demand from states such as Karnataka and Gujarat, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary at the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. "There is demand for the sweetener from these states as the monthly sales quota allocation for these states was lower," Kuvadia said.

In Uttar Pradesh, mills kept prices steady as demand was limited at higher prices, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Mills had raised prices by INR 20–INR 25 per 100 kg the previous day, tracking the higher prices prevailing in Maharashtra.

However, prices could fall in the coming days as market participants expect higher availability due to the ban on sugar exports, traders said. The government has banned exports of raw, white, and refined sugar with immediate effect until Sept. 30, or till further orders, whichever is earlier, according to a notification by the commerce ministry and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 4,062-INR 4,142 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,935-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1811 IST, the price of sugar on the InterContinental Exchange was up 0.6% at 15.10 cents per pound, despite expectations of higher global sugar output.  End

US$1 = INR 96.82
