MUMBAI – The government has announced a new Indian standard for higher ethanol-petrol blends, covering E22, E25, E27, and E30 fuel, the Bureau of Indian Standards said in a notification on Monday. The notification, which came into effect on May. 15, introduces a new technical specification framework for higher ethanol fuel blends beyond the current E20. The country achieved its target of 20% ethanol blending in December.
The notification comes amid a push for higher ethanol blending from various industry associations and ministries. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Apr. 28 issued a notification proposing amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to include higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100, as well as biodiesel and hydrogen blended gas. While E85 is 85% ethanol blended with petrol, E100 is pure ethanol used in flex-fuel vehicles.
The standards outline key technical requirements for higher ethanol-blended petrol, including ethanol percentage, octane levels, sulphur limits, vapour pressure, corrosion resistance, water content and fuel stability requirements.
Meanwhile, more ethanol produced from grain-based feedstocks was supplied to oil marketing companies in the first six months of the ethanol year 2025-26 (Nov-Oct). As of Apr. 30, distilleries across the country had supplied 5.15 billion litres, or 49% of the volume contracted by oil marketing companies. Of this, 3.33 billion litres were produced from grain-based feedstock and 1.82 billion litres came from sugarcane feedstock, according to data from the All India Distillers' Association. End
