NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices rose Tuesday on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange. Jeera and coriander prices rose barely while the price of turmeric increased more than 1% as farmers and stockists withheld supplies in anticipation of higher prices in the major markets of Maharashtra and Telangana.
The most-active June contract of TURMERIC was up 1.2% at INR 15,942 per 100 kilograms as farmers were holding back supplies in some major markets. "In regions like Sangli (in Maharashtra) and Nizamabad (in Telangana), farmers and stockists are holding back supplies, anticipating prices to cross the INR 18,000 mark," Kedia Advisory said, adding that this has created an "immediate supply squeeze".
"Premium 'Salem Fali' turmeric varieties were reportedly trading near INR 20,000 per 100 kg in major markets," the firm said, adding that weather-related disruptions have reduced the availability of export-grade qualities.
The most-active June contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 19,475 per 100 kg, after falling for four sessions. The contract closed slightly higher as traders bought more after it fell to an over-six-month low of INR 19,000 earlier in the day.
Going forward, SMC Global Securities sees room for the price to fall further to INR 19,110 per 100 kg amid rising supply pressure. The brokerage sees resistance at INR 19,810 per 100 kg. Arrivals across major markets have increased by 212% to 21,022 tonnes during the week, it said.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER was up 0.1% at INR 12,942 per 100 kg amid reduced arrivals in some markets. "Arrivals have started to decline in one of the major producing states, Gujarat, while it is yet to start depleting in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan," SMC Global said.
"Coriander market prices may stay sideways for the time being before moving either side," the broking firm said. "Price movement is likely to be between (INR) 12,850-12,990, owing to the current inflow of arrivals despite the good buying."
