MUMBAI – Prices of chana and moong rose in key spot markets across the country on Tuesday, while tur was mixed, traders said. Chana prices rose as demand increased amid a decline in arrivals, they said. Moong prices also rose due to a slowdown in arrivals of the summer crop, they said. Tur prices stabilised in some markets, while they continued to rise in others due to fears of tight supplies, they said

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 per 100 kilograms from Monday to INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have risen amid a slowdown in arrivals and an increase in demand, he said. Arrivals of the pulse has declined as stocks of the rabi crop have decreased, he said. "Arrivals of the new rabi crop began back in March, so now the stock with the farmers is low," he said. Arrivals are also low as most farmers are selling their crop to the government. The government is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, he said.

 

Demand for chana has increased from millers and traders, Kochar said. Demand for chana is expected to rise in June due to increased consumption during the monsoon, he said.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 5,828-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,100 per 100 kg. Prices of old tur were also steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader, said. About 27–28 trucks, each carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of the new crop, and one-two trucks with old tur arrived in Solapur, he said.

 

Prices have temporarily stabilised post a steep rise in the past few days, Sanklecha said. Prices had risen due to a decline in arrivals of the pulse amid lower stocks of the kharif crop, he said. Prices are likely to rise again in the near term amid expectations of tighter supplies, he said. "Prices will rise by INR 200-INR 250 per 100 kg because now, no new domestic crop is likely to arrive till November at least, and imports have already started to decrease," he said.

 

Imports of tur have taken a hit due to rising shipping costs and a declining rupee, Sanklecha said. The war in West Asia, which has kept the Strait of Hormuz effectively shut since Feb. 28, has pushed up crude oil prices, which is increasing the cost of shipping, he said. The rupee's decline is also making the legume more expensive for importers, he said. On Tuesday, the rupee hit an all-time low of INR 96.61 against the dollar. "The market is pricing in a further fall of the rupee to at least INR 100, so demand for domestic tur is expected to increase," he said.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 6,500-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the pulse rose due to a decline in arrivals of the summer crop, which had started in April, he said. "The summer crop is not large, so after almost a month of arrivals, the supply is now declining," he said. Prices are expected to rise further as arrivals continue to fall, he said. "Prices of both chana and tur have been rising for a few days now amid a slowdown in supply and revival in demand, so prices of moong are also supported," he said.  End
