MUMBAI – Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely in the plains of northwest and central India during the week, the India Meteorological Department said in a special bulletin on Monday. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the same for several parts of the two regions till Sunday. 

 

In northwest India, the weather bureau has warned of severe heatwave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh from Tuesday to Sunday. The bureau's agricultural meteorology division has advised farmers to provide frequent irrigation and mulching for standing crops such as maize, moong, urad, sugarcane, sunflower, vegetables, and fruit plants such as mango, banana, and papaya.

 

Heatwave conditions are likely to persist in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan till Sunday, the weather department said. In west Rajasthan, warm night conditions are expected till Thursday, and similar conditions are likely in parts of east Rajasthan till Wednesday, the department said. Farmers in Punjab are advised to apply light and frequent irrigation to vegetable, moong, fruit orchards, and onion nurseries. In Haryana, farmers should maintain adequate irrigation in standing sugarcane and cotton crops. The agromet has advised farmers in Rajasthan to apply need-based irrigation to moong and summer vegetable crops, as well as to young fruit plants such as mango, amla, pomegranate, wood apple, and plum.

 

In central India, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of Madhya Pradesh till Sunday, and in Chhattisgarh from Wednesday to Sunday, the weather department said. In Vidarbha, heatwave conditions are likely in some pockets till Saturday, the department said. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are advised to apply light irrigation to maize, moong, urad, groundnut, and vegetable crops as required.

 

The weather department has advised to avoid heat exposure in regions for which an orange alert has been issued due to increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms. 

 

Heatwave conditions are also seen in parts of Andhra Pradesh from Wednesday to Sunday and in Telangana till Thursday, though no orange alerts have been issued, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid conditions are expected in parts of Odisha till Friday, the bureau said.  End
