NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell Monday. Rising fresh crop arrivals and limited demand weighed on jeera and turmeric while coriander ended lower as traders possibly took profits after the contract hit a two-week high.
The most-active June contract of JEERA was down 1.5% at INR 19,455 per 100 kilograms amid subdued demand and increased arrivals of the fresh crop from Rajasthan. "Favorable weather across northwest India allowed farmers to complete harvesting more quickly than expected, resulting in a sharp supply spike instead of a gradual market arrival pattern," Kedia Advisory said. This effectively "neutralized the supply tightness feared earlier in the month", it added.
Jeera prices are expected to remain weak between INR 19,410-INR 20,110 per 100 kg, SMC Global Securities said.
The most-active June contract of TURMERIC was down 1% at INR 15,780 per 100 kg amid limited demand and rising supply. Turmeric prices declined to an over-six-month low of INR 19,410 per 100 kg, as rising daily arrivals have created a temporary "supply glut" in local markets, Kedia Advisory said.
"Increased arrivals of late-harvested, high-moisture turmeric have led to aggressive price discounting for average quality lots," the investment advisory firm added. Turmeric is likely to move in a range of INR 15,510-INR 16,310 amid arrival pressure and limited demand, SMC Global Securities said.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER ended 0.5% lower at INR 12,952 per 100 kg after hitting a two-week high of INR 13,300 earlier in the day. The contract closed down amid possible profit taking. However, the downside was capped by weak arrivals in markets in Gujarat. SMC Global expects coriander to trade firm between INR 12,940-INR 13,080 per 100 kg.
