MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh due to poor demand, traders said. Sugar prices were steady in Maharashtra as demand was need-based, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 15–INR 20 per 100 kilograms as demand was sluggish, as traders had already stocked up on sweetener at the start of the month due to concerns about lower availability, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said.
Traders in the resale markets are emptying the stocks already in the pipeline, rather than buying more, Gupta said. Prices have fallen by about INR 50-INR 60 per 100 kg from peak levels, he added.
Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand was need-based, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association said. But prices may fall in the coming days as market participants expect higher availability due to the ban on sugar exports, Kuvadia added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,980-INR 4,040 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,990-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,042-INR 4,122 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,915-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1648 IST, sugar prices on the InterContinental Exchange were down 0.3% to 14.76 cents per pound, driven by expectations of high global sugar output. End
