MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose in early trade Monday after opening lower than Friday's close. Although it opened at 26263.33 points, below the previous close of 26360.61, the index rose later and at 0944 IST, was trading 0.40% higher than Friday close.

Among the components of the Composite index, the bullion index was moving between gains and losses in volatile trade. Gold prices on MCX had opened lower Monday, as global prices were weak. With no end to the US-Iran war visible and US President Donald Trump issuing fresh threats to Iran, gold prices fell Monday. Against market expectations, Trump's visit to China did not lead to any hope of the war ending. In particular, disruption in energy flow was seen as the immediate effect, but with the inflation spectre intact, gold prices fell on fear that central banks may be compelled to raise interest rates. Subsequently, the bullion index came into positive territory but again dipped into the red. In the iCOMDEX index, gold was down 0.09% while silver was down 0.12%.

The energy index was up 2.77%, with crude oil was up 2.80% and natural gas traded 2.43% higher.

The base metal index was down 0.44%, with none of the constituent metals running positive. While lead was unchanged, aluminium and copper were down 0.28% and 0.64%, respectively. Zinc was down 0.36%.

The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy.  End
