NEW DELHI – Chinese gold exchange-traded funds attracted $498 million in April, registering their eighth consecutive monthly inflows, the World Gold Council said in a report. The total assets under management rose 1% on month to $45 billion, and collective holdings reached 301 tonnes, it added.
Though investor demand remained strong in April, China's gold futures trading activity weakened further in the month. Many traders shifted to equities amid a strong local stock market and easing gold price volatility. The Shanghai Gold Benchmark Prices and London gold prices were little changed in April as inflation worries reduced expectations of the US Federal Reserve easing monetary policy, the report said.
Volumes of gold futures traded on the Shanghai Futures Exchange declined 31% on month to 307 tonnes per day, but remained well above the five-year daily average of 26 tonnes, the report said.
Looking ahead, the council expects China's demand for gold jewellery and bullion investment to be weak. Jewellery buying is seen remaining weak amid a traditional off-season, while a strong equity market rally is likely to dull gold's investor demand. "Rising interest from local investors in the equity market rally – which started in early April – and the lack of a clear trend in the gold price may continue to discourage bullion investment," it said.
