MUMBAI – Conditions are favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. Subsequently, the monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26, with a model error of plus or minus four days, the weather department said. As such, an early onset of the monsoon is likely over the country, as the normal date of monsoon advancement over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is May 23, and over Kerala is Jun. 1.

The well-marked low-pressure area over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal persisted over the same region as of Friday along with the associated cyclonic circulation, the weather bureau said. The upper air cyclonic circulation over Bihar in lower tropospheric levels has merged with the above trough. An east-west trough runs from west Madhya Pradesh to north Bangladesh, and the upper air cyclonic circulation over Bihar has merged with this trough, the bureau said.

Under the influence of these weather systems, very heavy rainfall is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the weekend and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is likely over the same regions till Monday. The weather systems are also likely to cause thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Monday, over Bihar on Saturday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and over Jharkhand on Sunday and Monday.

Heavy showers are expected to continue over several parts of northeast India till Thursday, the weather department said.

A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country while another western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over Jammu adjoining north Pakistan, the weather bureau said. These weather systems are expected to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over multiple parts of northwest India till Saturday, it said.

The presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over east Madhya Pradesh and the east-west trough running from west Madhya Pradesh is likely to cause a wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Chhattisgarh till Sunday, the weather department said. Similar weather is likely over Konkan and Goa till Sunday and over central Maharashtra and Marathwada till Monday, the department said.

A trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over east Madhya Pradesh to north interior Karnataka. This weather system, along with the well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is likely to cause heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Sunday, over Kerala during the weekend, and over south interior Karnataka till Monday, the weather bureau said.

Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over parts of west Rajasthan till Thursday, with severe heatwave conditions expected in some pockets of the region from Monday to Thursday, the weather bureau said. In Uttar Pradesh, heatwave conditions are likely in most parts from Saturday to Thursday with severe heatwaves in some pockets during Monday and Tuesday, the bureau said.

Heatwave conditions are also likely over multiple parts of northwest, central, and west India till Thursday, the weather department said. Hot and humid conditions are expected in some parts of Konkan and Goa till Saturday, while warm night conditions are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha during the same period, the department said.  End
