MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur rose, while those of masur were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose due to a decline in arrivals, they said. Tur prices were supported by higher demand from millers and traders and a hike in minimum support price for the upcoming kharif marketing year, they said. Masur prices were unchanged, supported by the government's ongoing procurement, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg from Wednesday to INR 5,750-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are supported by a significant decline in arrivals of the rabi crop, he said. "Arrivals have greatly decreased across India because the government is purchasing the crop very fervently," he said. Many farmers are selling their crop to the government as the latter is procuring the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prices prevailing in markets currently, he said.
"Prices are only getting affected by the trend in arrivals, there is no hand of demand in this," Mangal said. Though there is some demand for chana, it is not substantial enough to move prices, he said. Demand is only likely to increase in June, as consumption of pulses increases with the drop in temperatures, he said. "If arrivals stay low when demand gradually increases in June, only then could prices rise. Otherwise, they will stay range-bound or even decline if stockists or the government decide to offload their chana stocks," they said.
Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 per 100 kg to INR 5,650-INR 5,680 per 100 kg, traders said.
Prices of new TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg from Wednesday to INR 7,400-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, and prices of old tur were unchanged at INR 6,700-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Around 13–14 trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of the new tur crop and one to two trucks with old tur arrived in the market, he said.
Prices of tur have risen amid higher demand from millers, Srinivas said. "Buyers are stocking up on the legume ahead of higher demand from consumers, especially as tenders are being released for the purchase of bulk grains and pulses to supply all the schools reopening post the summer break," he said. Though arrivals have also slightly increased, it has not affected prices, he said. "Farmers who were previously withholding stocks due to lower market prices are offloading them now that prices are rising steadily," he said.
Prices are also supported by the hike in the minimum support price of tur, Srinivas said. The government on Wednesday increased the minimum support price of tur for the kharif marketing season 2026-27 (Oct-Sept) to INR 8,450 per 100 kg from INR 8,000 per 100 kg.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 8,250-INR 8,350 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses amd Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Amid sluggish demand, prices are largely held steady by the government's ongoing procurement of the legume, he said. Most of the rabi crop in Madhya Pradesh is being purchased by the government, he said. "Arrivals of all foodgrains and oilseeds — be it chana, masur, wheat, or soybean — are all below 50?ross Madhya Pradesh because the state is very actively procuring everything," he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
