Sharply up on report of tax cut on FPI bond investment

MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed higher for the second session Thursday, tracking news of India's plan to reduce tax paid by foreign investors on bond investments. The Nifty 50 index closed above the 23600 level, with only 11 stocks in the negative territory. The rupee paring losses against the dollar and steady crude oil prices supported the rally. The Nifty 50 closed at 23689.60, up 277 points or 1.2% higher. The BSE Sensex ended at 75398.72, up 789.74 points or 1.1%.
According to a Bloomberg report, India is considering a significant reduction in taxes paid by foreign investors on Indian bond investments to facilitate foreign inflows and align policies with global norms. The proposal recommended by the Reserve Bank of India is being considered by the finance ministry, the report said, citing sources.
In the broader market, mid-cap indices ended over 1% higher in line with the benchmark peers. Small-cap indices, except the Nifty Smallcap 100, closed higher with marginal gains. Barring the Nifty IT, all sectoral indices gained in the session.
Pharmaceutical and healthcare companies mainly helped the 50-stock index to log higher gains. Cipla was among the top gainers in the index, closing over 8% higher. The stock was up for the second session after most brokerages turned positive on the stock post the release of the March quarter results and management's comments. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories ended 3% higher after declining for five straight sessions. Max Healthcare Institute ended 2% higher. The Nifty Pharma index was the biggest gainer among the sectoral indices, closing 2.7% higher. Nifty Healthcare followed closely, ending 2.6% higher.
The rupee ended Thursday at a record closing low of 95.7625 a dollar. At 1603 IST, Brent crude oil July futures were slightly lower at $105.31 per barrel.
Banking and financial services stocks gained significantly, with the index heavyweight HDFC Bank ending 2.7% higher. Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life Insurance Co., SBI Life Insurance Co., Shriram Finance, and Kotak Mahindra Bank ended 1.5-2.0% higher. The Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Private Bank indices gained over 1?ch.
Adani Enterprises was the top gainer in the Nifty 50, rising 8.6%. The rise in the stock came despite a large number of shares being sold at a discount to the previous close through a block deal Thursday. It also ended as the top gainer in the Nifty 200 index. Hindalco Industries ended 2.8% higher.
Bharti Airtel gained 5.3?ter the telecommunications major posted a 10% sequential growth in consolidated net profit
to INR 73.25 billion in Jan-Mar. The company's revenue rose 3% sequentially to INR 553.83 billion.
Saregama India ended nearly 15?ter the company posted double-digit on-year growth in both its consolidated net profit and sales for the March quarter.
NLC India was among the top gainers in the Nifty 500 index, ending nearly 14% higher. The company reported robust numbers for the March quarter, with its consolidated net profit rising nearly threefold on year to INR 13.93 billion and revenue increasing 31% to INR 50.42 billion.
Major IT stocks fell due to negative sentiment surrounding the new artificial intelligence deployment company by OpenAI, which it announced Monday. Barring Wipro, all the Nifty IT index constituents ended lower, with the index falling for the fourth straight session. The sectoral index settled 2% lower. Infosys closed 2.5% lower, while Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, and Tata Consultancy Services declined 1.2-2.3%.
Kaynes Technology India ended 20% lower after the company's revenue and net profit in the March quarter were sharply below consensus estimates. The company's consolidated net profit fell 22% on-year to INR 912 million, while top line increased 26% to INR 12.43 billion.
Tube Investments was the biggest laggard in the Nifty 200 after its bottom line for Jan-Mar fell sharply on year. The stock fell nearly 5%, extending its losses for the fourth consecutive session. The company's net profit for the quarter fell by over 65% on year in Jan-Mar.
Hindustan Aeronautics ended marginally lower after posting significant gains intraday. The stock reacted to the good set of results for the March quarter. The defence company's net profit and revenue for the March quarter surpassed analysts' estimates, with net profit rising nearly 6% on-year and revenue up nearly 2% on-year.
