MUMBAI – The maximum temperature over Delhi is likely to breach 40 degrees Celsius from Friday due to the absence of rainfall and cloudy skies, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Temperatures are expected to remain between 40–42 degrees Celsius till the middle of next week. This, along with strengthening of surface winds, is likely to trigger loo conditions, the agency said.

 

In the past few days, Delhi recorded light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, which kept temperatures largely in control, the weather agency said. Cloudy conditions also kept temperatures from rising above 38–39 degrees Celsius, the agency said.

 

Currently, a cyclonic circulation lies over Punjab, while a similar weather system also lies over southwest Uttar Pradesh, the weather agency said. An east-west trough, which was previously located close to Delhi, has now shifted northward, the agency said. With the absence of any weather systems over and around Delhi, no significant weather activity is likely over the city for the rest of the week, the agency said.

 

Maximum temperatures are likely to remain around 40–42 degrees Celsius from Friday till the middle of next week. Surface winds are expected to strengthen from Friday, persisting through next week. Strong winds, along with rising temperatures, could trigger heatwave-like and loo conditions, which could become more prominent during next week, the weather agency said. 

 

Loo is a strong, dusty, gusty, hot, and dry summer wind from the west which blows over the Indo-Gangetic Plains of north India and Pakistan. It is especially strong in the months of May and June. Due to its very high temperatures, exposure to it often leads to fatal heatstrokes.  End
