Maharashtra summer crop area dn 5%on yr at 483,873 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown summer crops across 483,873 hectares as of Monday, down more than 5% from 510,538 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the season's normal, which is 444,109 hectares and is slightly up from 480,631 hectares covered a week ago.
The acreage under paddy fell to 168,153 hectares from 171,877 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize was up at 99,425 hectares from 97,149 hectares last year, while that of bajra also rose to 43,630 hectares from 40,452 hectares a year ago.
Moong acreage so far has slipped to 17,333 hectares from 20,440 hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad was also down at 1,522 hectares from 2,360 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under summer oilseeds in the state was 119,562 hectares, down from 138,134 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 89,364 hectares from 102,732 hectares last year, and that of sesame was also down at 25,720 hectares from 30,278 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvesting done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as bananas, pumpkins, and tomatoes.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 34.1% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 29.7% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
