NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. While coriander prices rose slightly amid steady demand and declining arrivals in some markets, jeera prices inched higher due to increased demand for export-quality arrivals. Turmeric contracts closed flat.
The most-active June contract of JEERA was up 1% to INR 20,160 per 100 kilograms amid improved demand for better-quality arrivals. Expectations of fresh demand from China also supported prices of export-quality jeera, according to analysts.
The incidence of crop damage due to thunderstorms and hailstorms in Rajasthan has raised concerns about the availability of premium "A-grade" quality of jeera. "Unseasonal rains also delayed drying and processing activities, tightening the supply of high-quality "Sortex" grade stocks," Kedia Advisory said in a note.
The most-active June contract of CORIANDER was up 0.3% at INR 12,510 per 100 kg amid steady demand and declining arrivals in Gujarat. Although arrivals in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are currently progressing well, SMC Global Securities said it is likely to dwindle soon.
The most-active June contract of TURMERIC was flat at INR 15,934 per 100 kg. Turmeric prices had been declining amid weak demand in domestic and overseas markets. SMC Global expects the contract to correct further and hover between INR 15,530-INR 16,330 per 100 kg.
