MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell significantly as traders are not buying at the moment, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand did not pick up, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg as demand was sluggish, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders had stocked up on sugar at the start of the month, after the release of the sales quota for May, as the quota was considered to be low. Hence, traders are focused on emptying the pipeline stocks at the moment, rather than buying even more, Gupta said.
Prices had risen significantly at the start of the month, but demand fell at the earlier higher levels, Gupta said. In the resale market, prices fell INR 10–INR 15 per 100 kg, he added.
In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady as demand was need-based, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. After the government released the sales quota, prices rose significantly, he said. The government lowered the May sugar sales quota for Maharashtra by 18% from April to 666,331 tonnes.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 30-INR 40 at INR 4,000-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 30-INR 40 at INR 4,000-INR 4,090 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,042-INR 4,122 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,915-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1722 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1% at 15.15 cents per pound despite expectations of higher global sugar output. End
