USDA sees 2026-27 global cotton production lower on yr at 116.04 mln bales

MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has projected global cotton production in 2026-27 (Aug-Jul) at 116.04 million bales (1 bale = 480 pounds), down more than 5% from 122.64 million bales estimated for 2025-26, it said in the May edition of its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates monthly report. The report presents the first set of estimates for 2026-27.
The year 2026-27 is projected to open with global stock of 77.27 million bales while imports during the year are projected at 43.37 million bales. Global consumption of cotton is seen at 121.69 million bales. After taking into account the export of 43.34 million bales, the year is projected to close with a stock of 71.84 million bales, the report said.
In the previous year, global consumption of cotton was 120.13 million bales, and imports were 43.78 million bales, according to USDA estimates.
The agency has projected India's cotton production during 2026-27 at 24.0 million bales, slightly up from 23.80 million bales estimated for 2025-26. India's cotton consumption at 26.0 million bales in 2026-27 is also projected higher from 25.50 million bales estimated for a year-ago period. As per the report, India is projected to import 2 million bales of cotton in the year under report, down from 4.20 million bales during 2025-26. The opening stock in India for 2026-27 is projected at 11.02 million bales and closing stock at 9.52 million bales. End
