MUMBAI – The area covered under summer crops across India as of Friday rose nearly 4% on year to 8.31 million hectares, according to data released by the agriculture ministry. The acreage of all major summer crops, except rice, rose from a year ago, the data showed.
The area under summer rice, the largest crop grown during the season in terms of both acreage and production, was 3.11 million hectares, down over 4% on year, the data showed. The area under coarse cereals rose more than 12% on year to 1.60 million hectares. Maize acreage was up nearly 18% on year at 1.0 million hectares, and that of bajra rose nearly 4% from a year ago to 540,000 hectares.
The total acreage of summer pulses rose more than 5% on year to 2.50 million hectares, according to the data. Moong acreage rose slightly to 2.01 million hectares from 2.0 million hectares last year. The area under urad rose 28.5% on year to 460,000 hectares.
The total area under all summer oilseeds rose over 15% to 1.10 million hectares, the data showed. The acreage of groundnut was up over 31% on year at 551,000 hectares, and that of sesame rose to 507,000 hectares from 496,000 hectares a year ago.
The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered in the last two years, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
